Storyline: R. Balki, a writer and filmmaker, has a talent for identifying intriguing themes and adorning them with technical flourishes and astute insights on society and its hypocrisies. However, usually after a captivating build-up, his customised cars become stuck in the self-awareness gear. Chup is no exception.
It is not surprising that Kagaz Ke Phool, one of the best films ever made about self-reflection, contributes to the storyline of his criminal thriller. Chup, on the surface, is about a psychopath maiming cinema critics for giving films improper scores, using Guru Dutt's classic as a point of comparison (which was lambasted by critics of the time).
To liberate cinema from mediocrity and impose the tyranny of taste, the film's three writers—among them famed film critic Raja Sen—project the murderer as a sort of self-appointed vigilante. Curiously, the movie makes no mention of the rating system itself. It doesn't ask if understanding of art should be time-bound or quantifiable. The critics of the day destroyed Kagaz Ke Phool, yet it survived and gained fresh life because it was discussed by another group of reviewers who paid more attention to the work's craft than its topic. Excellence and mediocrity coexist in every democracy. There is no progress to be made by purging oneself for the sake of others;
