Storyline:
At the very least, this appears to be the poetic notion that inspired Gautham Menon to adapt Jeyamohan's short narrative, today known as Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu ( VTK). At least that is how the movie VTK begins, with Muthu (Silambarasan) being the dying fire's ember that is flung out of it in an apparent attempt to suggest that he is a survivor. Or perhaps he is a fireball himself. The latter makes more sense.
Let's clear this up right away: This gangster movie, Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, is not your typical one. It doesn't even explicitly claim to be in the gangster subgenre. The nice procedural drama that replaces it is both a blessing and a curse. More on that in a moment. Furthermore, Gautham Menon doesn't seem interested in recounting a gangster's life; instead, he seems pleased with the voyage itself. He seemed eager to document Muthu's life in real time. By doing so, Gautham produces a mood piece with space and leisure that makes it hard to determine whether I loved it to its entirety or if something felt lost in translation.
